Since I didn’t have regular child care and I was intimidated by the runners in local running groups, I decided to start training by walking with my newborn son.

I have never enjoyed running, but a friend needed one more person for a marathon relay and I volunteered to help her out.

Since I didn’t have regular child care and I was intimidated by the runners in local running groups, I decided to start training by walking with my newborn son.

First we took short walks, just around the block. We walked every day and the walks got longer and faster. My son really enjoyed being outside and that inspired me to continue with these walks.

Soon I was walking a 15 minute mile and was ready for the marathon relay. I completed my leg at a pace of a 15 minute mile.

Now that the marathon relay is over, I still walk with my son nearly every day. It has become a special time for us to spend together and enjoy the fresh air and sunshine.
