Best Decision I Have Made As A Mother
I grew up in a family where none of the kids were breastfed. We were all formula fed and I grew up thinking that breastfeeding was somehow old fashioned or something that people who couldn’t afford formula did. I had the impression that formula was better. When I first got pregnant I was still holding on to these beliefs. While I was pregnant, like most moms I read books and poured through websites on a baby’s first years so I would know what to expect. I started seeing statistics on how breastfeeding was healthier for your baby, but I still wasn’t sure if it was for me. When I was about 6 months pregnant I was shopping with my mom. She asked if I was going to breastfeed. I told her I wasn’t sure and she acted like it was weird that I was considering it. Because I still wasn’t sure I took a breastfeeding class through Swedish. A few weeks before my daughter was born I decided I would give it a shot. If it didn’t work out, that would be ok. The day my daughter was born she practically climbed up my chest to get to the breast. She was only out of the womb for a few minutes before she was latched on and we never looked back. My daughter has been 100% breastfed. Choosing to give breastfeeding a try was the best choice I have made as a mother. I cherish the hundreds of hours of bonding time we have spent while nursing. I wish views had been different while my mother was raising children. I feel that she missed out on a very special connection that you can only get from nursing. My daughter is about to turn two and only nurses for comfort every once in a while now. I am sad that our nursing time is coming to an end, but happy and proud that I was able to nurse my daughter for the last two years and provide her with all the love and health benefits that come with it.
